Emirates Golf Club is delighted to invite its full members to participate in the Emirates Matchplay Championships 2020 – 2021. The below FAQ’s are to help clarify a few changes being introduced for the coming season.

What are the five Matchplay tournaments this coming season?
Mixed Foursomes, Men’s Fourball, Men’s Singles, Ladies Fourball and Ladies Singles.

Who can enter the Matchplays?
Only full golfing members are eligible to enter the club Matchplay events.

When will entries open and how do I enter?
Entries are now open through the Viya app or Members Zone. Entries will close on Saturday 3rd October 2020.

How many entries are there for each Matchplay?
Previously entries for the Men’s Singles was limited to those who qualified via the Medal OOM, or in the final Medal qualifying event. This year however, there will be no qualifying criteria making it open for everyone. Based on member feedback, an additional round has been added to enable more members to participate. This means the Matchplay schedule will start earlier.

Entries for the remaining four events remain unchanged and are open to all eligible members.

When will the draws be released?
The draws for all five Matchplay’s will be released the first half of October.

Will the handicap allowances be changing?
Yes. The World Handicap System (WHS) has been introduced and as a result different allowances will be used.

Why are the handicap allowances changing?
The previous allowances were based on USGA recommendations. The USGA acknowledged that these were out of date and based on data from the early 2000’s. The WHS has compiled and compared recent data from around the world to decide the allowances that give players of all handicaps an equal opportunity.

So what are the new handicap allowances?
Before outlining the new allowances, it is important to understand a few key terms.

  • Playing handicap – the course handicap adjusted for any handicap allowances. It represents the actual number of strokes a player gives or receives for the round.
  • Course handicap – the number of handicap strokes a player receives, before handicap allowances.
  • Handicap allowance – the percentage of a course handicap recommended to create equity for all players participating.

The new handicap allowances for the 2020 – 2021 season are:-

Mixed Foursomes – 100% handicap allowance. The couple with the higher combined playing handicaps receive strokes amounting to 50% of the difference between the two sides.

Men’s Fourball – 90% handicap allowance. The golfer with the lowest playing handicap gives shots accounting to 100% of the difference between their playing handicap and the fellow golfers playing handicaps.

Men’s Singles – 100% handicap allowance. The golfer with the lower playing handicap gives shots accounting to 100% of the difference between their playing handicap and their opponents playing handicap.

Ladies Fourball – 90% handicap allowance. The golfer with the lowest playing handicap gives shots accounting to 100% of the difference between their playing handicap and the fellow golfers playing handicap.

Ladies Singles – 100% handicap allowance. The golfer with the lower playing handicap gives shots accounting to 100% of the difference between their playing handicap and their opponents playing handicap.
