Emirates Golf Club Wins Prestigious Emirates Energy Award

Emirates Golf Club is celebrating winning the prestigious Emirates Energy Award. The leading golf destination that forms part of Dubai Golf - a leisure division of wasl Asset Management Group - was accorded the accolade in recognition of its achievement with Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE) and advanced irrigation. The honour was bestowed to HE Hesham Al Qassim, CEO of wasl Asset Management Group, at the Emirates Energy Awards event, which was held yesterday at Armani Hotel, Burj Khalifa.

"Emirates Golf Club was honoured to have received the Emirates Energy Award for its TSE and irrigation initiatives that have been implemented to safeguard the region's most precious natural resource, water. The club is a premium leisure destination for tourists and residents of the UAE and flies the flag for the country as the annual host of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. With the eyes of the world on us during such world-class events, we are only too aware of our responsibilities in highlighting the need for resource preservation. We are therefore delighted that our efforts and endeavours to protect the environment have been officially recognised with the prestigious Emirates Energy Award," said Christopher May, Chief Executive Officer, Dubai Golf.

The Emirates Energy Award is given to organisations that have demonstrably proven processes and results in the areas of energy and resource management. The four main criteria that form the evaluation are 'Creativity and Innovation,' 'Energy Efficiency' 'Increase of Renewable Energy Share' and 'Economical, Social and Environmental Impact.' Emirates Golf Club impressed the judges with resource-saving initiatives that include changing its course water supply to treated sewage effluent, transitioning its turf grass to a variety better suited to lower quality water and installing a state-of-the-art pump station. The latter innovation allows up to 6,500 gallons of treated sewage effluent water per minute to travel through the network, thereby significantly reducing watering time.

Emirates Golf Club received its Emirates Energy Award on the back of becoming Golf Environment Organisation (GEO) Certified®, a distinction it attained in January this year. The club is the first and currently only golf club in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to achieve the certification. GEO Certified® is golf's internationally accredited ecolabel which is awarded based on the club demonstrating a commitment to continual improvement in six main areas of sustainability; water, nature, energy, supply chain, pollution control and community..

Established in 1988 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Emirates Golf Club has grown from a single course to a world-class venue and host of international sporting events. The club now has two courses, the Majlis Course and Faldo Course, with the Majlis Course being awarded numerous accolades over its 25-year history. In 2012 Golf World magazine named it as one of the 'Top 100 Golf Courses in the World,' with the Asian Golf Monthly Awards 2010 honouring it with 'Best Course Middle East.'
